Happening Hour: Comedy Conceptual, will draw together some of the area's top artists performing in the genre, headlined by Perth O'Duibhdiorma. Perth O'Duibhdiorma performs a unique hybridized form, drawing equally from performance art, stand-up comedy, philosophy, and mass-media culture. Operating in the familiar performance form that mimics stand-up comedy, this work is able to engage and entertain audience through humor, often without even audience awareness that the performance is actually "art." This new form of conceptually focused comedy blurs the distinctions between forms and disregards artificial boundaries, creating work that is multi-form and infinitely possible. In the wake of the post-modern, thick in mediatized confusion of relentless post-production, the desire for the real finds little relief. This new form, also referred to as "comceptual art," addresses our current situation and operates within it, without resorting to tactics that gloss over issues, it poses the questions, "how do we construct and interpret meaning?" and "how do I determine what is real?" Perth performs regularly at comedy clubs, college campuses, and visual art venues. An accompanying statement from a performance at Hillyer Art Space earlier this year: "21st society is crumbling under an ever-increasing weight of information. There is no longer such a thing as a veritable source. Through his performances, Perth tries to combat this trend, by educating his audience on important issues that burden society today. Perth has done seminars including sexual health for senior citizen, car safety for preschoolers and aerobics for pregnant men, women and children."
