Natural Fallacy
Group art show by 229 Collective and Aether Art Projects
July 14 - August 12, 2012 87 Florida, 87 Florida Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20001 Drawing on themes of the natural and the hybrid, Natural Fallacy is a group show curated by 229 Collective in collaboration with Aether Art Projects. In philosophy, natural fallacy is the conclusion that value in terms of good and bad is based in nature. What is natural is good, therefore what is unnatural is bad. As a fallacy, natural fallacy comes as a broken concept, implying inherently its invalidity. This show addresses how that thought can be re-presented and complicated in contemporary composite forms and with the integration of technology. Derived from an open call, the show combines 2D, 3D, and sound works with emphasis on mixed media, and will feature a performance night. Participating artists will include Frank Adams, Eames Armstrong, Tim Campbell, Christopher Cunetto, Sara Diamond, Dan Gray, Chandi Kelley, Stephanie Kwak, Marina Litvinskaya, Gabriel Mellan, Jennifer Nugent, Haniya Rae, Jordan Sanders, Najva Sol, and Gregory Vita. The show will run July 14- August 12 at 87 Florida. the exhibition will be open Saturdays 12-5pm, Sundays 11am-4pm, and by appointment. |
The opening reception is Saturday, July 14, 6-9pm and will feature Gabriel Mellan's exhibition performance, and a sound piece by guest artist Adrian Parsons. FB
Adrian Parsons: Uncanny Valley
"The repulsion shown towards a recognizable digital sound as it approaches likeness to sounds of the physical (or, for lack of a better term, 'real') world. Questions asked and unanswered: why does a 64kbps major chord from T.I.'s 2008 'Whatever you like' sound completely atrocious, unredeemable and yet completely on the grind?"
Monday, July 16, 8-10pm: "Artists Creating Space" is a continuation of a previous talk held in response to a panel at the National Building Museum on "Creating Space for Artists."
What comprises a creative space, an art space, an artist's space? The second conversation will address the importance of existant spaces and non-traditional creative spaces as a very basic and critical alternative to creating new spaces. Let's step back and talk about what we mean when we talk about space. Is the perception of an art space as a stepping stone for developers affecting artists' ideas of an art space? More about the first talk in City Paper and blog post. In different ways, the NBM talk, subsequent backlash, and the 52 O talk showed the need for open-forum discussion about creating and sustaining creative spaces- this is just the second in what will be an ongoing series of talks. Open event, free, BYOB, invite friends and anyone interested. FB
