Drawing Residency
Residency: August 23-26
Exhibition: opening reception August 31 6-9pm
87Florida
Blog post, Drawing Residency: Performing to Curating. My Thoughts.
Eames Armstrong: For the entire duration of my three night residency, I will draw as much as possible. In order to maximize my output, I will open the residency to invited artists to participate in the creation of my drawing. I will focus on drawing, as it is a critical process in any artistic endeavor, a very basic translation of the unthought to the suddenly visible. The residency offers time devoted exclusively to the production of new work, and will provide for basic needs and art supplies for me and my guests. The residency will take place at the Pink Line Headquarters, located several critical miles from my home and studio, allowing me to separate myself physically and mentally from familiar territory, forcing myself into a new and inspiring environment. I will echo Philippa Hughes’ generosity in hosting the residency, by generously sharing the experience and opportunity with a large number of artists who will participate for as long as they like. As an advocate of drawing, I hope to raise awareness of the importance of the form as both means and end. Drawing Residency is a participatory durational performance, tracing the form of a non-traditional artist residency, and resulting in an exhibition at an alternative art space. I will curate a show at 87 Florida the following weekend, consisting exclusively of my work created during the residency.
